Healthy travel is essential to maximizing your experience, keeping safe and coming home feeling excited about your adventures but also relaxed. Here are 4 things you can do on your next trip to stay healthy - don't underestimate them - they are powerful little tips!
Wash Your Hands
While it may seem obvious one of the most important things that you can do to stay healthy while traveling is to wash your hands. When navigating busy places like the airport, metro and train stations, frequently washing your hands can reduce the spread of respiratory illness so you can stay healthy.
Tip: Don’t forget the hand sanitizer for those times when you can’t wash your hands.
Although it may be tempting to order that cocktail or glass of wine, alcohol can cause dehydration and leave you feeling tired and unwell. Drinking plenty of water also helps bolster your immune system and decreases the overall dehydrating effects of air travel, which can cause headaches, cramps, tiredness, and stomach problems. To avoid jet-lag, opt for a bottle of water and you will arrive at your destination ready to begin your adventure.
Tip: Bring an empty water bottle with you through security and fill it up at a water fountain before you board the plane.
Anyone that has traveled knows that you can become uncomfortable and antsy while sitting in a car or airplane seat for a long period of time. The best thing to do is to get moving. If you can, get up and move around. Moving helps with circulation and keeps fluid from accumulating in our hands and feet, making them feel tight and swollen. There are other exercises that you can do while seated as well. Exercises like ankle circles/pumps, knee extension (straightening the knees), glute squeezes (squeezing your butt cheeks together) can help pump the muscles and give them a little workout at the same time.
Tip: Take several deep breaths as you hold the moves.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Your body requires regular sleep patterns to remain healthy and alert. When you travel, these patterns can be disrupted. Tip: Bringing a natural sleep aid like melatonin can assist you in getting the sleep that you need.
Eat Healthy. Vacation is a time when we abandon our usual healthy eating habits, but there a few things that you can do to keep yourself feeling good. Always start the day with a high protein breakfast. It will fuel you for the morning and help you to avoid fast food snacks such as bagels and donuts. Tip: In your carry-on pack high protein bars, no-salt nut packets, your favorite packets of tea or oatmeal. You almost always have access to hot water.
